Seward is a really nice town. We had disembarked from our cruise ship here
in 2009, but never set foot in town, as our transportation to Anchorage whisked
us off immediately. So to come back and actually see the town was great. They have a movie in the library about the
1964 Earthquake (9.2 on Richter scale) and the Tsunami that followed. Wiped the town out and fires from the oil
tanks took the rest.
They have a wonderful Sea Life center, the only rescue in
the state of Alaska. They get animals
from all over the state that are injured, pending if they survive until someone
gets to them. So majority of their
animals are rescues that can't be returned to the wild. We saw Puffin and Horned Puffin in the Sea
Life Center but later saw them out in the Inlet when we took a boat cruise to
see wildlife. Huge bird sanctuary areas
and lots of birds (along with their dodo).
We passed by many glaciers and just beautiful terrain in the Inside
Passage.
Our campground was right on the ocean front. $15 per night with no amenities for a city
run campground, but great views and a lot of nice people traveling throughout
Alaska too. It was an easy walk to town
or Old Seward to check out the trinket shops or the fish caught from the day's
tours. Lots of Halibut. Neat town with small town feel.
